THE University of South Wales broke the 100-point barrier as they whitewashed a hapless Trinity of St David’s Swansea side.
Garin Vivian’s men recorded a highest ever BUCS League victory for the Thirds – 114-0 – since their inception in 2011.
After suffering a 75-0 defeat to Cardiff Metropolitan Fifths last week at Cyncoed Campus, the Thirds responded in a perfect manner by obliterating the opposition.
The win takes them off the bottom of the table and was no mean feat given that last week Trinity lost by just six points to Aberystwyth University Seconds.
USW got off the mark immediately. Lock George Ingram escaped the Trinity back line, to open the scoring. Captain William Thompson successfully kicked the conversion.
Another try followed when Dominic Marques escaped the challenge of the visitors’ defence to score an impressive try.
The most eye-catching score came from Benjamin Simmonds who made his try all on his own. After knocking it over the Trinity backs, he skilfully hacked on before racing to ground the ball before it went across the dead-ball line. Thompson continued his 100% of conversions.

Dafydd George scored a fourth try just on the 15 minute mark as USW broke from a line-out but Thompson couldn’t convert this time.
The last try of the half came from Thompson himself after good link-up play with Dan DB. Thompson duly obliged with the conversion, to give USW a convincing 38-0 lead at the end of the first half, which the referee brought to an end after only 33 minutes.
The second half proved to be USW’s most prolific with Trinity simply unable to cope with the relentless onslaught.
Liam Scourfield and Dominic Marques scored tries in quick succession, as Marques scored his second of the day.
Ed Randall and Max Roberts got in on the action, as they showcased USW’s quick-flowing rugby.
Gwern Phillips and Liam Scourfield were enjoying a good partnership, as Scourfield laid the ball off to Phillips for another try.
Thompson was relieved from conversion duties, as try scorers opted to drop-kick convert themselves.
It went from bad to worse for the Trinity as their scrum-half was sent to the sin-bin for losing his head.
His absence proved costly, as USW reached the century. Marques laid it off to Jediah Light as he scored his first try of the game. Light was unable to add to his tally, as he missed his conversion.
The last act of the game – the final touchdown – came from Dylan Robertson before he successfully kicked the conversion.
Altogether the University of South Wales scored 19 tries in what was a poor advert for competitive rugby at this level.
They now make the trip to Aberystwyth University next week, for their third game of the season.
