Venue: Cardiff University Sports Training Village, Talybont
The University of South Wales claimed their second win of the season as they put in a commanding performance over win-less Cardiff University 5th.
Both Cardiff Uni and USW went into the game after a one week break, with USW showing their freshness, with a free-flowing display from Gail Calford’s side.
It was Cardiff who drew first blood through their goal attack and she doubled her tally early on to give the home side a fast start. USW Captain Emma Roberts replied immediately before GA Georgia Brookes levelled things up. From there, USW grew into the game as they delivered a barrage of attacks, but Cardiff’s GS scored from a CU C pass. The ever-reliable Emma Roberts levelled things up again, with a close-range finish.
USW took the initiative and began a scoring run in the first quarter. Georgia Brookes netted another two goals to her tally for the day, whilst Emma Roberts added two more to give USW a two-goal lead into the second quarter. After a fairly even first quarter, the second quarter offered a flurry of goals for both sides.
It was USW who showcased their class though, as they scored four goals without reply as Emma Roberts successfully went on a quest for goals. In the role of wing defence, Ellie Nota held her own as she had a good balance of defending and attacking and she set Emma Roberts on her way.
The two sides went into the break with USW leading the hosts by nine goals, already scoring more than they did in their last game. One of the stand out moments of the game was the slick passing movement of USW, as Ellie Nota found Roberts who returned the ball to the wing defence, before finding Roberts again to score her second goal of the quarter.
She added ten goals to her name in the third quarter, as shot after shot continued to go through the hoop. Cardiff University’s GS ensured that her side at least put on a competitive showing and were in with a shout of a comeback going into the fourth quarter, as she registered five goals.
USW lead 28-20 at Talybont and had the perfect start as the final fifteen kicked off, Emma Roberts scored on the rebound on one of their first shots of the quarter. Forcing Cardiff into a number of mistakes, Georgia Brooks ensured that it wasn’t just ‘the Emma Roberts show’ as she recaptured her form from earlier in the game.
Cardiff’s GS wouldn’t take the result lying down though and despite the defeat, her four goals in the final quarter made the scoreline competitive. The last action of the game came from Roberts, as she scored from a considerable distance to wrap up proceedings.
