SPORT Wales are to outline their plans for a new vision for Welsh sport after consultation process with the Welsh sport organisations.
After a four-month dialogue throughout the whole of Wales with sporting organisations, it will now go to an open consultation for the next six weeks. Sport Wales’ Twitter page began the consultation, by posing several questions to their followers.
“Through the national conversation, we’ve gained hugely valuable insight on the current picture of sport in Wales and views on how to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future together.” Said Sport Wales Chief Executive, Sarah Powell.
In the feedback received, the report identifies that people believe that Sport and PE has been downgraded in schools.
The Community Hub model is something that people are overwhelmingly in favour of. The Hubs offer a range of sports for the local community.
As well as the Community Hub, the public want to be made aware of sporting opportunities in their community, through technology like social media.
“People have been refreshingly honest and passionate about what’s ahead. It is clear sport will need to continue to seek and build purposeful relationships at every level and the needs of the people of Wales will need to be heard and actioned.
“The vision sets out a compelling destination for Wales, one where everyone enjoys sport and leads an active life. We look forward to receiving people’s views on the Vision for sport in Wales.” Said Powel after the findings of the report.
The report comes after Wales’ best performance at the Commonwealth Games, where they racked up 36 medals overall, including 10 gold.
Wales earnt most of their gold medals in Athletics, Boxing and Shooting. Boxer Lauren Price earnt a Gold Medal in Boxing out in Australia, having previously been involved with the Women’s national football team, where she captained the U19s side.
Costs have been identified as an issue for participation in Sport, but Sport Wales aims to combat those issues, to ensure those who want to participate can, with no barriers.
Sport Wales has been in a period of transition, after several changes in their main management roles.
Last year Chair Paul Thomas and vice-chair Adele Baumgardt were relieved of their roles and replaced by interim Chair Lawrence Conway and Vice Chair Pippa Britton, who is a former Paralympian. In March 2018, they appointed Jane Foulkes as their new Head of Partnership Development.
