USW head coach Andrew Whittington insists his side are targeting promotion this season from BUCS Western Tier 2.
Whittington was blunt about his side’s current situation after watching them beat Cardiff and Vale College 2-1 in their final pre-season friendly.
The current division is a far cry from the team’s past glories of winning the overall BUCS championship title in 2015 and 2019.
But Whittington says USW’s 1sts belong where they are – and he is “excited” about what they can achieve.
He said: “I’m actually quite excited to play at a level that I think we could be competitive at, and can try and get promotion straight away. That’s going to be the aim.”
After a hard-fought victory at the Sport Park, Whittington suggested his side were a touch fortunate to hold on.
He said: “I think, in honesty if their finishing is a little bit better it’s probably a different game. I thought we were overrun at times.
“We’ve got to be more resolute in games – we can’t have games finishing 6-4 and 4-3.
“Last year it becomes like a basketball game, so we’ve got to be a bit more solid.
“The last three weeks have been positive in terms of training – good numbers and good engagement with it.
“So hopefully that’s a good sign in terms of next week (when USW face Cardiff Met 3rds).”
