USW Men’s 1sts were comfortably dismantled by Cardiff Met 3rds despite a resilient first-half performance at the Sport Park.

The hosts started the match strongly, and although they couldn’t many chances they were solid at the back and nullified the opposition’s threat.

But there were warning signs of what was to come.

USW defender Kavan O’Leary made a crucial block early on in the first half to stop Met from taking an early lead.

Later in the first half, USW were lucky to get the benefit of a contentious offside decision after Met striker Fin Skiverton tapped home from a corner.

The home side ran out of luck shortly after the second-half kicked off, as Skiverton converted a chance after Joe Holland in the USW goal had initially made a great save.

Met doubled their lead minutes later through a deflected effort from Harry Williams.

There was a glimmer of hope for USW when striker, Munya Mabwe had a powerful shot saved.

But any optimism was short-lived as Met put the game to bed two minutes later thanks to another Skiverton goal.

Andrew Whittington’s USW side failed to create any meaningful chances despite late dominance of possession.

The defeat puts an immediate dent in USW’s promotion hopes from BUCS Western Tier 2, which was the aim for Whittington before the season started.

USW have the opportunity to get their season back on track as they face Cardiff University 2nds away next week.
