USW were beaten decisively by Cardiff University 3rds at the Sport Park.

The difference in the two teams was clear early on as Cardiff went 4-1 up within the first few minutes, their long passing and quick tempo causing lots of problems for the hosts.

Throughout the first quarter USW did find a quick pace themselves, but their passing accuracy was found wanting, even though centre Kennedy Knight kept Cardiff on their toes by using space cleverly.

In defence for Cardiff Keziah Marrett used her height to intercept passes that stopped USW from scoring on numerous occasions.

By the end of the first quarter, despite being the better side, Cardiff led narrowly 15-12.

USW came back strongly in the second quarter, making short, sharp passes to good effect.

But Cardiff remained the stronger team, with long passes that made it through multiple USW players, who then had to work extremely hard to win back possession of the ball.

USW trailed by nine goals at the halfway stage, and as the third quarter began Cardiff began to press home their superiority.

They easily intercepted USW’s passes and Cardiff shooter Holly Williams made them pay.

Going into the final quarter Cardiff led 53-32 and this was a period when the visitors really pressed home their advantage.

USW fought to the end, but it wasn’t enough.
