USW 5ths goalkeeper Friday Mbude hailed his side’s ‘great game’ as they edged out Aberystwyth 2nds in an attritional affair at the USW Sport Park.

Goals either side of the break from Coel Pedler and Joe Doyle sealed a much-needed win for the hosts in the wake of a 9-0 capitulation against University of Wales Trinity Saint David last week.

Following that disjointed performance, USW had much to prove going into this encounter. Aberystwyth provided the perfect opportunity for a rebound; winless, and sitting on –3 points after a walkover against USW’s 4ths prior to Christmas.

Mbude said: “It was a great game today. After last week, the boys concluded that today was going to be a really nice game for us.

“We came out for a win and a clean sheet today, which was very good for the team.”

The Reds’ shot-stopper also believed that some of the wrongs from their previous performances were corrected in this display, with the indoor pitch suiting USW’s patient build-up play.

“Our defence was very good”, he added.

“We all worked very well in training last Monday, and we displayed what we did well in those sessions today.”

Despite a competitive hiatus before the return fixture against Aberystwyth in February, Mbude believed the outcome of this encounter could prove to be a motivator.

“This result will carry us very well into the next game. But we need to keep going, keep on training and keep on believing in ourselves.”

“In the next game, we will all give even more than we did today.”

USW now move on to nine points and remain in third place in the Aldi Men’s Western Tier 6B.
