A GOAL was all that was needed to secure the league title for USW Men’s 1st side as they faced University of Bath.
The 1-0 victory saw them win the BUCS Premier South division and ensured they did so without losing a game.
USW captain Kane Owen struck home a penalty shortly before half time to secure the victory after Louis Gerrard was brought down inside the box.
Bath’s best chance of the game came from their Number 7 in the first half. A curling effort seemed all but in the top corner, but thanks to USW’s keeper Ashley Morris, a clean sheet was kept.
USW had a chance to double their lead after Cameron Keetch played in a fine ball which put Mikey George one on one with the Bath keeper, but he could only fire just past the post.

The second half saw USW continuing to search for more goals. Cameron Keetch was brought down in the penalty area after chasing a through ball, but claims were quickly waved off by the referee.
Bath began to mount the pressure in the second half. USW responded well with a solid team effort in defence. A freekick for Bath outside the box was the best chance of the half for the home side but it was fired over by Bath’s Number 7.
USW only needed a draw from the game to win the title. They sat back in defence, using their fast counter-attack to exploit Bath’s defence. Mikey George made a brilliant run down the right-hand side before crossing to Miles John who calmly slotted home only to be flagged offside and the goal disallowed.
USW’s defence held out for the remainder of the game and there were scenes of celebration on the final whistle as Steve Savage’s side finished champions in an unbeaten league campaign in the BUCS Premier South Division.
