Report: University of South Wales 3rd 48-0 Aberystwyth Uni 2nd

By Jordan Jones and Jack Cook

A dominant USW romped to a convincing 48-0 win over Aberystwyth University to complete a Western 4B double over the mid-Wales side.

Inside centre, Dominic Marques and second-row Ryan Eaton both scored a brace with Jamal Abdilahi and Gareth Pugh also in on the act of try scoring. USW did, however, have two players sent off in the second half, despite being unchallenged by the visitors.

The hosts showed their intentions early on and were rewarded with a try in the opening minutes. Ryan Eaton broke down the flank and placed the try centrally under the posts to provide William Thompson with a better chance for the conversion.

USW continued their dominance when they broke from Aberystwyth Uni losing the line-out. Key figure Dominic Marques who has impressed for the Thirds this season scored with a well-worked try.

Left-winger Jamal Abdilahi who collected the ball following a failed Aberystwyth Uni clearance, showing his strength to bounce off the Aberystwyth full-back and scored the try.

Kicker William Thompson missed the opportunity to further extend USW’s lead as he failed to kick the conversion on both occasions after the tries from Marques and Abdilahi.

Six minutes before the break, Gavin Vivian’s side asserted their dominance with a fourth try of the half. Gareth Pugh completed a successful turnover and full-back Ethan Hunt placed it down for a try.

Straight from the second half kick-off the ball was turned over by USW then the ball was passed out wide to Ryan Eaton who scored his second of the game.

USW scored their second try of the game thanks to the substitute full back who beautifully handed off the defender to score in the corner.

There was an unexpected turn of events as USW player Ethan Hunt joined Aberystwyth side because Aberystwyth was unable to field a full team.

And then a moment of madness from the USW substitute prop saw him yellow-carded for lashing out at an opponent. The man advantage didn’t help Aberystwyth as good handling skills were shown by USW to get the ball out wide quickly to Dominic Marques who scored the try.

USW was down to 13 men after the substitute hooker was slowing the ball down in the ruck and received a yellow card but that still didn’t stop USW to finish off the game strong as a brilliant offload by no.16 put through no.23 to finish off the game with a try after a dominating performance by USW.
