STUDENTS from the Sports Journalism degree at the University of South Wales are holding a mental health and sport conference next month.
The event will take place at the USW Sport Park in Treforest, the week after Time To Talk Day
The students will focus the conference around the national campaign, which states: “It’s easy to think there’s no right place to talk about mental health. But the more we talk about it, the better life is for all of us.”
Mental health, as broad as the term is, can affect anyone, including those with an interest in sport at all and every level, even elite athletes.
Course leader Julie Kissick explained the reason for the conference: “Mental Health in sport is a significant talking point but often people shy away from having those conversations because they can be difficult.
“We are hoping this conference will help attendees to have those discussions and also raise awareness among a demographic that has the potential to be directly affected by some of the issues we’ll discuss.”
The guest speakers include Dr Dai Lloyd AM, who will give the keynote address, and student and mental health campaigner Abigail Davies.
Dr Lloyd is Chair of the National Assembly for Wales’ Health, Social Care and Sport Committee. He is a practicing GP and is also a member of the Mental Health Cross Party Group.
Abi is an ambassador for BEAT, a charity which provides help and support for those with eating disorders. She has talked extensively about the positive impact sport has had on her.

More details of the February 9 conference and those taking part will be released later this month.
